Why you should join a Professional Society

We know it’s tough to get out there and network, let alone try and enter a society comprised of some of the smartest people in the world. That’s where professional societies come into play.

These professional societies for engineers are built around commitment to the cause. What we mean by this is that the greatest and brightest individuals didn’t get to the top because they were “naturals” at engineering. They got there because they tried hard, studied material everyday and consistently reached out to others on more efficient ways of obtaining the end goal, innovation. When you are creating a new invention, or even a new wave of technology, it’s rare to find that these individuals were successful without the help of others.

Some of the main professional societies for engineers are:

ASME– American Society of Mechanical Engineers

IEEE– Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers

ASCE– American Society of Civil Engineers

AIAA– American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics

There are MANY more to chose from and even though some are smaller, this doesn’t put them in a bad category. In some of the smaller groups like SWE– Society of Women Engineers, and NSBE– National Society of Black Engineers, you can climb to the top faster earning high rankings in that society. Ideally you want to reach the level of an officer, who has say in public matters and is in charge of the movement for that community. These are all great resume boosters that truly show you are interested in using your gifts to give back to the community.

Not only do you get access to these communities, but you get daily letters and articles that are written and published by some of the greatest companies in your field, but you get access to seminars, national conferences and weekly magazines with the latest and greatest technological information.

Now, there costs….There is a small annual fee that is required, but this is minimal compared to the amount of information you will obtain from all of the perks these packages include. We have heard of many success stories in interviews when asked, “What extra curricular activities have you been doing?”. This is a huge plus if you want to push yourself ahead of the pack! Students get a huge annual discount and in some cases (like ASCE) its even free. Check out more by clicking on those links provided for each society above or by searching their websites, these organizations are non-profits so each entry fee is quite minimal.

You are missing out on a huge opportunity to learn from the best is you pass this up!! We are not affiliates of these societies, so this is the truth!

We hope you found this helpful and good luck!
